Practice makes perfect...

Hi everyone,

I am enjoying every aspect of my internship so far even though it is very demanding at times.

Every day, my journey starts with press clippings for some of Totem’s clients. There are days when I find press clipping very time consuming and tiresome. After scanning the articles, I usually have to crop, straighten or retouch them on Photoshop because they have to be “perfect” when sent to the clients. Before starting my internship, I did not have any notion of Photoshop because for me, it was a complicated tool; thus of little interest to me. I realized that I was completely wrong and I learned to use it with the help of Fabiola. Besides, it is amazing what we can do with Photoshop!

I have been very very busy lately with managing the three Facebook pages because during festive seasons, companies are often very competitive and they try to find ways of influencing people to buy their products or to use their services. We always had something to add on the fan pages and that was the most interesting part of my internship so far. In January, one of the clients sent a letter to Totem in which she thanked our team for the great job done on Facebook. She especially thanked Stephanie, Fabiola and I for our satisfactory contribution. I was totally overjoyed!

I feel, above all, very lucky because I work in a pleasing environment where everyone is very kind to me. Even though they have much work to complete, each time I have something to ask them, they explain it to me and guide me in my work. For me, there’s no better way to learn!

Even though some parts of my internship are less enjoyable, I still feel like I am learning a lot at Totem. Practice makes perfect!!

Hello Virginie,

First of all, I want to congratulate you for the hard work you have been doing for months at Totem, this is pretty impressive and I am convinced that today you must have gained a lot of useful tools and skills for your future career (in PR or not).
I have read your three posts on the blog and I am amazed to see how busy you have been during your internship. From what you wrote, I can compare your internship with mine and I reckon that working for a Public Relations & Communication Consultancy like Totem is quite different from working for a company or an organisation. Personally I would rather work for an organisation and dealing with the image and reputation of one single company than having a portfolio of clients and having to swap constantly from one to another. From what you experienced, what do you prefer? Was it sometimes hard to deal with different clients? It must have been something I guess!
Moreover, I have seen that social media is now omnipresent in PR and I have been asked to monitor some of the facebook pages as well. We should not forget that Social Media is just a tool in Public Relations though, and not a strategy on its own. Also, I am glad to hear that you are having good feedbacks from Totem's clients - why not a job offer in the future, who knows?

I wish you well for the rest of your internship if you are not yet done Virginie, and keep on learning!
All the best.

Sally.
