Networking in Action

Hi Guys,

My pervious blog was about my meeting with the leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott. I also discussed in brief how I had the opportunity to converse with other influential people, both in political sense and in public relations. Since this time there has been further developments and I am now involved in an amazing program because of it. Let me explain…

At the meeting with Mr. Abbott I was introduced to a lovely lady who worked with Senator Michaelia Cash. We began talking about what we currently do and what our passions were. It turns out we had very similar ideas on many human rights issues and she gave me her business card. I got to work the next day and looked up on the internet a few of the amazing organisations she had mentioned to me the day before, such as the Global Poverty Project. They were exactly the kind of organisations I would like to work for when I’m a grown up (When I leave university and have to work in the real world). I emailed her straight away. I wrote a brief outline of what we spoke about the day before and expressed how keen I would be to be a part of some of the programs she was involved in. A few emails later and a few more people being added to the emails I was offered a wonderful opportunity. I filled in the forms and crossed my fingers that I would be accepted.

I was accepted!

I am currently part of the Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP). The program is worth $1000 per person; however the Department of Immigration and Citizenship through the Diverse and Social Cohesion Program have given funding for 25 women aged between 18 and 30 from different cultural and religious backgrounds an opportunity to complete the course for free. The course is designed to connect inspiring young women leaders, discuss local community issues, develop networking skills, speech writing, increase blogging and social media skills, and learn more about cultural diversity and international relations. YWLP is affiliated with numerous global organisations, many of which have representatives as guest speakers throughout the program. One of the organisations I am particularly interested is the Young UN Women. I am hoping that my networking skills will continue to develop and hopefully I can make some connections with UN organisations.

I went to my first workshop last week (18th Jan) and I met some of the most amazing women I had ever met. The YWLP is held in the Muslim Women’s Support Center of WA. Everyone was from some of the most amazing place on earth; the Middle East, North Africa, India, and any other super cool countries. Everyone had an incredible story about their life and it has made me even more excited to go back to my next workshop and learn more about these wonderful women and their stories. My end goal is to one day work for the United Nations or the World Health Organisation. Through networking at one event, I am now involved in a program and meeting people which are enabling me to step closer to my goal. I’m so excited and I can’t wait to tell you more about my exciting journey. I hope you are all feeling as fulfilled as I am…

Busy as a bumblebee (Eliza Yuen 14818349)

Good day to all, hope it has been a good week, tgif and all the mayhem should at least cease for the weekend! Been kept very busy with doing articles for both Choose the right house (Feng Shui) and the revamping of a newsletter for our Vietnam client which is a hotel in Hanoi. We are preparing an airport banner for the hotel to feature at the Hanoi's main airport and the organising of the logistics is driving me crazy. I now completely understand what lost in translation is when there are such difficulties to communicate with full language barrier. We need to get the photography and the digital imaging work to be done so as to quickly meet the dateline set by the airport to feature our banner and hopefully get increased awareness and a higher clientele turnover rate for Fortuna hotel.

There is a list of articles placed above that i have also written for Choose the right house which had deemed tons and tons of research on Feng Shui to get it accurate. Have a good weekend everyone!

Hello friends!

In Public Relations, every day is different and you never stop learning!

Totem is affiliated with Edelman which is a leading independent global Public Relations firm. Through this attachment, Totem obtained a client, namely, Hewlett Packard, a multinational computer and electronics specialist. Totem has been appointed to organize an event, namely, the Technology HP Technology on Tour which is an annual training event that takes place on an African level. The main purpose of the event is to introduce latest technologies and new products developed by HP Imaging & Printing Group to the company’s partners and to the media. The HP Technology on Tour was held on the 17th and 18th of January.

It was very enriching and amazing to participate in the project because I got the opportunity to do many interesting things closely related to Public Relations. It was also very different from what I have been doing for the past few weeks.

Stephanie wrote invitations which were ultimately sent to journalists. I translated the invitations into English because foreign journalists were also invited. I also translated many other documents because the HP’s General Manager of the African Region is Anglophone.
Afterwards, we sent the invitations to the different media organizations and we called them for confirmation. I created my own contact book which I intend to keep preciously!

19th January-Week 2

Today’s been a pretty full on day drafting up key messages, goals/objectives and strategies. In terms of a media strategy, the company has nothing. So I’m starting from scratch and hoping to identify some main goals and objectives to achieve in 2012 through a unified message strategy.

The most obvious problem is the lack of brand association. Because the company (Atlas) has different brands associated with it (Perl’eco and Nomad), recognition of the link between the three needs to be made. Atlas is one of the top wholesalers of loose pearls in the world, Perl’eco is has just opened in Claremont as the retail outlet of Atlas pearls and Nomad is a world-famous exhibition by photographer of the stars Russel James, held in the Perl’eco showroom, yet the association between all three projects is not very well known.

Because the company has so much going on with its different projects, brands etc, the marketing team have told me that in the past a scrambled, unclear sort of message has been delivered to the media. Below are the four main messages I have come up with to hopefully deliver a more unanimous message when dealing with the media.

3.0 Key Messages

· Atlas is a competitive supplier and distributor to the wholesale loose pearl market.

Atlas has extensive experience in the cultivation of high quality South Sea pearls in large volumes.
The company possesses the ability to deliver regular supplies of well graded goods.
Atlas manages their own farms and controls all the intellectual property that is required in the production process.
Atlas can prove the provenance of its pearls.
Sustainable environmental and community protection through positive action and involvement

· Atlas is the number one retailer of pearl inspired luxury goods.

o Perl’eco retail outlets throughout Indonesia and also in Perth offer an extensive range of high quality South Sea pearls, direct from Atlas pearl farms.

o Knowledgeable, attentive and friendly staff will be able to assist shoppers with all enquiries to ensure that they are getting an authentic product at a fair price.

· Atlas, Perl’Eco and Nomad are building an enviable reputation in the development of innovative concepts associated with pearls and luxury goods.

o Atlas and its associated brands are collaborating with the luxury sector to develop new products, ideas and brands.

· Atlas and its associated brands work together to ensure an ethical, ecofriendly and sustainable approach to business.

Atlas continues to stay up-to-date and heavily involved in the latest research and development of the industry.

o Atlas sets a very high standard when it comes to corporate responsibility in terms of both the environment as well as the societies in which the pearl farms operate.

Hopefully having these key messages will make Atlas and its associate brands more accessible and recognisable to the public.

Anyway I think I’ll save talking about everything else for my next blog entry, my eyes are going square! I feel like there’s still so much to do before I finish up and go back to uni but am enjoying the pressure. Working with people who are passionate about their jobs and the industry makes this so much more enjoyable!

Dear all, it has been busy as a bumblebee for me with this internship! Back than i mentioned a new project that we are embarking on which consist of an area that is relatively unknown to me. Now, i can proudly proclaim that i do at least know the gist of the art of Feng Shui and how it can be applied. As for the actual practicing of it, i think i will still stay at the PR end of it.
At the moment, we have created a newsletter for our client consisting of information on Feng Shui and how it can be used in the purchase of homes. Our current targeted group are the HDB dwellers in Singapore with more focus on those that stays in the east side.

The newsletter was finalised yesterday and today, our client would be taking a look and start utilising it! I feel quite accomplished about it as we had to write it in a manner that would appeal and yet make the information about Feng Shui relevant to people and these are things that I previously had zero knowledge on hence it feels quite good, to be part of the creation of something.

Next up would be the property giants that we would be targetting, aiming to get across our ideas to them, would update on how that goes.

One week in!

17the Jan (Start of week 2)

I’m writing this first blog entry after completing my 7^th day of PR placement at Atlas South Sea pearl. I had intended to write an entry in my first week but became so overly excited about all the PR opportunities for the company that I ended up spending the majority of my free time last week taking my work home. I learnt in the first week that working 8am-5pm and then staying up late doing more is the best recipe for an early burn out! So this week I’m calming down and doing things in a more methodical, grounded and less eager sort of order!

The company I am working for is a fully integrated business who own and operate several pearl farms, manage loose pearl distribution, have in-house jewellery manufacturing capabilities and operate several retail outlets. My work experience is taking place in the Perth head office located in Claremont.

Although the company has in house marketing, they have recently decided to let go of the consultancy that was doing their PR. The fact that there are minimal PR strategies in place is both good and bad for my work experience. It’s good in that I have quite a free reign in terms of putting my university skills into practice. However, sometimes it would be helpful to have someone with more experience in PR telling me the best way to do things. Having said that, it’s challenging as well as exciting to be putting the skills I’ve learnt in theory to use in a real-life organisation!

In my first week I have constructed a PR folder with templates for media releases, a media kit, a PR strategy and an event plan. I also formed an events calendar for the year which will tie in with the Media Strategy I’m currently working on, attended a website management course and constructed a media data base.

The company is hugely conscious of their Corporate Responsibilities in terms of both the environment as well as the societies in which their pearl farms operate. This concept of luxurious products with a sense of meaning behind them sets Atlas apart from other companies in the industry. This point of difference forms an ideal platform from which PR strategies can be built and implemented.

Hi everyone,

I am enjoying every aspect of my internship so far even though it is very demanding at times.

Every day, my journey starts with press clippings for some of Totem’s clients. There are days when I find press clipping very time consuming and tiresome. After scanning the articles, I usually have to crop, straighten or retouch them on Photoshop because they have to be “perfect” when sent to the clients. Before starting my internship, I did not have any notion of Photoshop because for me, it was a complicated tool; thus of little interest to me. I realized that I was completely wrong and I learned to use it with the help of Fabiola. Besides, it is amazing what we can do with Photoshop!

I have been very very busy lately with managing the three Facebook pages because during festive seasons, companies are often very competitive and they try to find ways of influencing people to buy their products or to use their services. We always had something to add on the fan pages and that was the most interesting part of my internship so far. In January, one of the clients sent a letter to Totem in which she thanked our team for the great job done on Facebook. She especially thanked Stephanie, Fabiola and I for our satisfactory contribution. I was totally overjoyed!

I feel, above all, very lucky because I work in a pleasing environment where everyone is very kind to me. Even though they have much work to complete, each time I have something to ask them, they explain it to me and guide me in my work. For me, there’s no better way to learn!

A good start

Hi all,

The blog will begin with a quick narration and background of my placement endeavors. When I was researching organisations in which I might complete my public relations practical internship, I focused on organisations that organise and protect animals and natural creatures, as I am interested in nature, environment and wildlife. So it was only natural that I approached an organisation that helps and protects animals for work experience and to undertake professional PR experience in the field. I contacted some organisations which are involved with animal protection. After a couple of weeks waiting I finally received acceptance from Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

When I first came to Kanyana, Jen, the General Manager, gave me an introduction to her business ideas, her marketing promotion plans, and which part of the work I should focus on while she showed me around in Kanyana, and at the same time, I was introduced to other staff and volunteers. After our initial talk, I promised that I would think about her business plans, and come back to her with what I could do for the organisation.

The following practical day, I showed her a list of my five detailed plans I had prepared to meet her business ideas, and she was very interested in the fourth one, however, both of us were unsure if the business ideas we had discussed for the organisation were able to specifically meet to the PR practical unit’s requirements.

Kanyana doesn’t have a PR team, so the only thing I can do is taking initiative myself and completing the whole project on my own with input from their management. I feel very excited and confident to do it, as I am able to put the professional PR knowledge that I have been learning on campus into practice in the ‘real world’. In order to make sure what I am going to do is on the right track in meeting my PR directives of the placement, I emailed Kantharina Wolf. While I was awaiting her response, I read all relevant documents and detailed information about Kanyana, and also finished writing up Kanyana’s background for my report.

Jen also arranged the desk and computer for me in the office, so until now, it is a good start already. Hope I will receive the response from Kantharina as early as possible, so I am able to proceed with the project.

Public Relations and Digital Media

Hi bloggers and friends!!

I hope that you are all fine and that your respective internships are going on smoothly. I am doing my internship at Totem Limited in Curepipe. I already know the company very well because I previously did an internship there between June and July 2011 and since November 2011, I started working at Totem. The experience is awe-inspiring! So now I am doing my PR393 internship in this outstanding public relations company and I am looking forward to put into practice everything that I have learned in Pubic Relations for the past two and a half years!!And to learn many many many more things about this amazing career!!

Totem consists of a team of 9 professionals working in different departments, namely, advertising/design, editorial, media relations, digital media, events and public relations. For my internship, I will assist Ms Fabiola Mamdy, the Community Manager and Mrs. Stephanie Coralie-Odayen, the PR Project Manager of Totem. It sounds thrilling to follow them in their PR activities because I already had a foretaste of their duties during my previous internship!

What I like about Totem is that the work is well planned and everyone follows the schedule strongly; even me as an intern!! At Totem, I realized how a thoroughly planned journey is fundamental in Public Relations; even more than in any other field I bet! My internship is very helpful in the sense that I am more autonomous and I learn everyday how to tackle stressful moments and to see in any difficulty a good mean to overcome my apprehensions as a novice.

I have been made administrator for three Facebook pages and on a regular basis, I add relevant information concerning the daily activities and events of these three organizations. I love this part of my job because I am fond of writing! One of the pages has more than 16,000 “friends”. Knowing that so many people read my “posts” make it exciting and fearful at the same time. Once, I made an error on one page and the client immediately phoned Fabiola to ask her to remove and modify the post. As from that day, I am always very careful and accurate in everything I write because in many cases, a Facebook fan page gives the audience, a first impression about the company and mistakes can have a negative impact on what they might think about that company. A simple mistake on a Facebook page might sound insignificant, but we always have to be on the watch-out so as to avoid mistakes.

I shall end my first post here. I will be back very soon to share my experience at Totem with you!

My Southbound experience!

Hello again,

Hoping that all your internships are cruising along and you're all learning lots and having fun! I love reading everyone's blogs and seeing all the different types of public relations everyone is doing.

My internship at Sunset Events is going well- I went to my first working festival at Southbound in Busselton over the weekend and it was absolutely amazing. It was a terrific insight into the industry- showing me the hard work involved on the day as well as experiencing the festival backstage and feeling so lucky!! Arctic Monkeys, Regurgitator, The Grates, Aloe Blacc, Naked and Famous, Beirut, Kimbra, Josh Pyke, Crystal Castles, Grouplove, Arj Barker, Gossling, John Butler, The Kooks, The Jezabels, CSS, Pnau and a million more incredible artists made Southbound another festival success!

I must admit I am SO tired after the weekend because it's been hard balancing work and my internship and life in between!It was so rewarding to see everyone's hard work be rewarded with a great sense of achievement.

Here's a rundown of my weekend:

Friday

6.30pm- Finish work and drive down to Busselton.

9.00pm- Arrive in Busselton, get settled and find the house where I'm staying with a few of the Sunset team.

11.00pm- Janelle arrives back to the house from the festival and debriefs me on what will be happening over the weekend. Then help Janelle organise the onground schedule for the two days, detailing all the artist interviews that will occur, when to meet the media and all kinds of things she will be involved in.

1.00am- Bed time!

Saturday

6.00am- Wake up!

7.30am- Head to festival site.

8.00am- Drive around the site for a site tour, drop off media packs at camping box office and weekend box office. Get set up with lanyard, AAA wristband and little space in the office where we are based.

9.00am- I drive to the Mercure Hotel to drop off media packs for Xpress, the Sunday Times and the West. I then drive to the Bay View Hotel to drop off media packs for the Drum and Street Press.

9.30am- Go into town in Busselton to get coffees for staff. Find out where Mitre 10 is and head there to get Janelle a padlock she needed.

10.00am- Head back to site.

10.30am- I drive to the Busselton airport to pick up promo winners that have just got off their helicopter ride.

11.00am- Sort out how to fastrack the two winners in the huge camping lines, a few dramas and a lot of calls on the radio but I finally got them through. Set them up in their pampered camper areas and dropped their bags, made sure were all settled.

12.30pm- Odd jobs

1.25pm- Meet GWN at media tent and escort backstage.

1.35pm- Meet Colosoul at media tent and escort backstage.

1.40pm- Artist interviews conducted by media in artist lounge.

2.25pm- Meet journalists from the West and promo winner and escort backstage.

2.30pm- Promo winner meets Josh Pyke and conducts her own interview with him backstage.

4.25pm- Escorted media to side of stage and watched them film (there are filming restrictions so I had to ensure they did not film or photograph for too long)

6.30pm- I watched some of Aloe Blacc’s set.

9.00pm- Watched a bit of the Arctic Monkeys interview backstage.

10.15pm- I went to the Crystal Castles set to ensure NO media filmed or photographed the set because they had strict instructions from the tour manager not to. Crystal Castles were half an hour late to the stage and came on to a booing crowd! Only one lady who wasn’t aware of the media restrictions arrived and I let her know about the rule.

For the rest of the evening I watched a few performances, waited around in the office in case there was anything to do and hung around. I spent a bit of time following a lady from GWN around to ensure she filmed things legally.

1am- Headed home- very tired!!Day one complete!

Sunday

7.00am- Wake up. Janelle lets me know there isn’t much on for the day and that I don’t have to arrive on site until later. So lucky! Back to bed for a quick sleep!

10.00am- Go and pick up my sister and go out for a coffee on the main Busselton strip and have a wander around.

12.00pm- Arrive on site and see there is not much on the schedule for the day as the media don’t need as much direction now they know what the go is.

12.50pm- Went and sat down and watched CANT perform their set.

1.50pm- Went backstage and watched Unknown Mortal Orchestra perform their set!! It was incredible being so close to the stage and seeing the whole thing in action.

2.40pm- Watched Josh Thomas and guests perform some comedian laughs from the side of the stage!

3.00pm- Watched Missy Higgins backstage- amazing!

4.15pm- Watched the Jezabels set from side of stage, so close the smoke covered my face from the stage!

6.00pm- Met promo winners at the media tent, gave them a quick tour of backstage and then took them backstage for CSS, Fleet Foxes then CSS again.

7.00pm- Met up with a friend and danced away to the Kooks, my favourite act of the entire weekend!!

8.40pm- Watched John Butler from side of stage.

After this great day of viewing acts I waited around in case Janelle needed a hand but she had everything under control (she is amazing).

10.30pm- I left the site for the drive home to Perth as I had work the following day- it was a terrible drive I could hardly keep my eyes open!

1am- Hop into bed for a much needed sleep!

That is my amazing weekend in a nutshell! I am so grateful for the weekend I’ve had and the experience I have been a part of.

There is a lot more I could say and more I could write about my day but I think this gives a good picture of the amazing work Sunset Events does and a little behind-the-scenes of what goes on at the events!

PR in the real world day one

Hi All,

I Started my internship a few weeks ago at the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority, I will Just update you on the first week at the authority and working in a PR capacity.

On my first day being there real early I had to wait for my supervisor to come, What I have noticed and appreciate there is that on my first day they took me to all the departments where I was introduced to everyone as in the PR department one had to know who to liaise with, who to ask what. This really helped me adapt as the work began soon after.

My first task was to right an advertisement for the annual Christmas fair the authority organises at the airport whereby people working in crafts and other small entrepreneurs get to sell their products which is a great beginning for Seychellois and tourists in their Christmas shopping. I wrote the advert in creole, being in Mauritius for the past 2 years and using a different creole made writing Seychellois creole a bit confusing at first but then I got a hang of it.

In the afternoon I attended a children's party, really guys it was no party for me, I was there to represent the Authority who had sponsored the event as part of their CSR program. Through the short time I was there I took pictures and asked a few questions as my next task was to write an article about the event for the quarter yearly newsletter.

My first day was hectic but i found it as a great start, since I got to learn quite a great deal, My supervisor did not just give me tasks but she explained why and what initiated such events. I had learned about CSR programs, articles, interview, newsletter but now I was working on something that was going to be published.

Feels good to be putting what I have learn during the past semesters into practice.

A Meeting with Abbott

Hello Fellow Public Relations Interns,

I began my internship a little bit before Christmas with an organisation called Oxfam. This is my first post so I thought I would give you a little briefing on what Oxfam is about.

Oxfam is a worldwide not for profit organisation who work directly with impoverished populations around the world. The main aim for Oxfam is to devise methods, while working with people from the community, to stop poverty and injustice and introduce sustainable human rights efforts.

Where do I fit in to this massive conglomerate of people trying to save the world? Well Oxfam is split into many different sections and subsections each with different roles, tasks and objectives. I have been teamed up with W.A’s Campaigns Coordinator, Paddy Cullen. Together we are working on trying to raise awareness to members of the Australian government on the effects climate change is having worldwide.

Skipping forward just a little, Paddy invited me to attend a forum with him where the leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, would be attending. It’s not every day you have the opportunity to meet with someone as influential as the leader of the Opposition, so naturally I jumped at the opportunity. Below is a picture of Paddy giving Mr Abbott a copy of a climate change report devised by Oxfam.

At this forum I also had the opportunity to meet with Liberal Senator Michaelia Cash who spoke very highly of Oxfam and supported a lot of the anti poverty campaigns Oxfam has developed over the years. Michaelia Cash also invited myself and Paddy to make an appointment with her if we were ever in Canberra to further discuss some of the action we wanted to see on climate change. The forum was not only a way to directly be in contact with government members, but I also had the opportunity to do some personal networking with other influential people in my area. I was lucky enough to gain two separate contacts in both government and public relations, one of which I have since been in contact with and have picked up some more hands on experience in my field. Once we got back to the office I went straight to work. After a 10 hour day and no lunch, I had written up a media release which was sent to 4 local newspapers and a blog which got put onto the Oxfam website. It was very satisfying seeing my very first professional blog being posted and members of the public commenting on it. It all happened very quickly and I learnt that time is a very precious thing in public relations.

I have to say I am very excited to see what is next in store for my internship. I’ll keep you posted…

New beginnings (Singapore, 14818349)

I've started out my internship about a month back and wow have there been tons of learning to be done. The one major thing i realized is very important would be the need for extremely intensive research of the company and the industry that our client would like to penetrate into. My company is a small one with various different roles to play. Currently when i joined in, a new project came on hand where a client wants to combine the retail estate sales with Feng Shui.

Feng Shui is the art of understanding nature, the idea is based upon how land is alive and filled with Chi or rather energy. It stems from the ancient Chinese believe that the land's energy have the ability to either make or break the kingdom and theories of yin and yang as well as Feng Shui elements.

There are many avid believers of the power in Feng Shui and many have applied them to their life. Hence, the new idea that have build up of combining both Feng Shui and the purchasing of properties.

With this new project on hand, I had to do multiple read ups on Feng Shui and Singapore's property market as this is a very new idea. Would update on the progress soon. Wishing all the very best in your internships

Southbound festival preparations in full swing!

Hi all,

Hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and will be starting off the new year nicely!

Well, it's full steam ahead at Sunset Events because the next festival, Southbound is only 10 days away! It's a hard time of year to be organising festivals because Christmas and New Years are family times and holiday times for many, but for the team at Sunset it seems there is no rest for the wicked! I've been thinking about how many people take holidays this time of year, but everyone at Sunset is so busy it would be virtually impossible. The communications manager (and my supervisor) Janelle is on holidays in Singapore but she is working away on her laptop to organise everything before Southbound kicks off on the 7th of January.

My main role in the lead up to Southbound has been helping to sort out media accreditation for the media organisations wanting to write reviews, film or photograph at the event. They each get packs with welcome letters, information and passes. I've also been organising flights and car hire for big media attending from the Eastern states. I'm continuing media monitoring and have been doing all sorts of little jobs like ordering disposable cameras, editing the Southbound program and promotional material, updating spreadsheets for ticket allocations and emailing those that did not receive media accreditation this festival.

1 word that I would say there is ALWAYS alot of, is: emailing. The communications intern inbox is constantly filling up, but no where near as much as Janelle's. She sends and receives hundreds of emails constantly- all day every day. Her role isn't communications manager for nothing! The capabilites and wonders of emailing, messaging, Facebooking, Tweeting, blogging and all forms of new-ish communication methods are incredible, but I've also been starting to think about the downside to this ease of access and fast communication.

Emailing is so useful in sending and receiving info and contacting people from all over the world, as is other online communnications, but I've noticed that it is so demanding and puts a great deal of pressure on the person to respond in a timely fashion and act upon the email content. I think of Janelle and how she has to meet everyone's needs and read every single email. It's a good thing she is very efficient, focused and hard-working! A good email filing system is essential I think..along with the ability to not get overwhelmed by the number of emails flooding in constantly! Now I realise how necessary good time management, typing and communication skills are because in a job like this there is so much happening and so many things to do that you won't survive if you don't have these skills! And emailing is only one of the online mediums Janelle has to interact with on a daily basis...!

My internship so far has given me such a great insight into the industry, I know there is so much more to learn about not just the event industry but about communications in any workplace. As a keen festival girl I'm now so much more aware about the effort and preparation that goes into events and how important every single person's role in that process is. The operations and logistics managers, the artist liasion managers, the site manager and every single staff member, plays a huge part in organising each festival. I'm looking forward to working at Southbound and seeing how it all fits together and I can't wait to help out at the event! Will keep you updated!

Social Networking in PR - Essential or Overkill?

Hello fellow PR 393 Students,

Recently I was elected to set up a Facebook, Twitter and Blogger site for one of my supervisor's clients, a non-profit organisation for women in local government. The purpose of these social networking sites is to connect, network and share with members and non-members across the state - as many local governments of WA are in regional and remote areas.

Whilst I was establishing these sites, and trying to affiliate with other mutually-beneficial organisations who shared the same interests as us, I began wondering - 'is facebook really essential for all organisations and businesses?' Without a clear purpose or goal in mind, there really is no telling what social media will do to your brand and its reputation - and no way to know whether your objectives have been achieved!

I found that many of ALGWA WA's members are most likely not members of Facebook and especially Twitter anyway, and if they are I don't think they are hugely 'active' members, and so I was a little confused about what I was trying to achieve with these sites if we were unable to connect with a large volume of members or potential members.

I can see that there are benefits to the organisation with a strong target market on social media that have a relevant stake in the organisation, but otherwise I really don't see the need for all businesses to be setting up social networking sites - what do you guys think?

I suppose only time will tell whether ALGWA (WA)'s social networking efforts will prove fruitful!

I hope everyone is enjoying their work placements so far.

It’s already been 14 days since I started my internship at Sun Resorts Ltd and for the time being I am benefiting from every second of it. As I told you in my previous post, I am currently working with a team of five people involved in Communication, Marketing & Branding and a little bit of Sales. Having the opportunity to deal with all those different tasks enabled me to isolate the specific goals and objectives of Public Relations in a company and learn about its rightful place in the tourism industry.
Basically, the main goal of the Public Relations department at Sun Resorts Ltd is to enhance the company’s name and to present it to the world in the best light. Indeed, every single task the PR unit is involved in has as main aim to protect the reputation of the company. The tourism industry in Mauritius is undeniably fiercely competitive with new hotel groups emerging every year. As far as I have seen, the Communication Department is always looking for an edge that will make the hotel group stand out from the crowd, something that makes them different, appealing, innovating and interesting to both the public and the media. We also have the responsibility to help the public and the media to grasp a better understanding of how the company operates and this is made possible through the websites we developed, social media pages, and other tools we use like brochures, newsletters, etc.
Moreover, public relations people seem to have been tagged with the image of constant partying and networking to expand their address book; I have to admit that I had the same kind of perception before being fully involved in this internship. But the reality is usually long hours of stress, big responsibility and hard work for anyone implicated in Public Relations. The crucial expertise necessary to work in the world of PR is a very high level of communication skills (written and verbal), being organised, able to multitask and work in short time frame.
Below is an advert I have been working on for Long Beach and which has been published in the local press here in Mauritius.

Next week is going to be a HUGE week! In fact, I will be fully busy with the big event Sun Resorts is organising in close partnership with Standard Bank which is the Standard Bank Mauritius Open 2011- the not to be missed golf event of the year in Mauritius. I can’t wait to be part of it!

The festival season kicks off and so does my internship!

Yoga...Ordering foosball tables...Finding interstate flights...Facebooking...And now blogging!

In one day at Sunset Events all that has happened and more. I had such an exciting day and looking back on it, what made it exciting was the variety of jobs I did and how accomplished I felt.

It was my fifth day at Sunset and a significant one because I feel like my internship kicked off on this day! I am gradually starting to find my way around the busy hub where some of the best festivals in WA are born, and am thoroughly enjoying it.

I'm now used to the quirky, friendly Sunset staff walking around the little Freo shed barefoot with coffee and funny stories and enjoy listening to music and Janelle (the communications manager and my supervisor) having lengthy conversations with herself each day! I am often bewildered how the Sunset team manages to keep their good humour under so much pressure, definitely an admirable trait I would like to have in my future career!

Day five kicked off with media monitoring, online and in the latest editions of the Drum and Xpress magazine then it was time for Wednesday's yoga session. This was my first yoga experience and I'm hooked already. I almost fell asleep if I hadn't been woken by the yoga instructor's soothing voice.

The afternoon's activities consisted of:

• Finding flight options for Channel V crew to come over to Southbound for their segment on following artists around
• Organising a foosball table for Southbound
• Updating website copy for Southbound via website company
• Checking festival websites for errors or incorrect links
• Drafting a media release for the Laneway festival
• Downloading and saving photos from Stereosonic to the Sunset server
• Adding paid advertising to Janelle's marketing megasheet in Excel
• More media monitoring
• Creating a new album on the West Coast Blues 'n' Roots Facebook page and adding in all the professional photos of each artist in the lineup

So, without going into too much detail- it was a pretty productive day! Stereosonic kicked off the festival season on Sunday and so I can tell it is going to be so busy from now on! I'm really glad I'm doing my internship in this time period though because I think I'll get a really good insight into the events industry and all the public relations activities involved in the peak season for Sunset Events.

Will see what's in store over the coming weeks! Am interested to hear about what everyone else is doing in the world of PR internships!

Australian Local Government Women's Association Meeting

Hello fellow public relations Students...

Last Thursday the 17th of November I attended the Australian Local Government Women's Association of WA (ALGWAWA - quite the mouthful!) general meeting with my mentor and supervisor Veronica Lawrance from Ffolio PR.

Veronica is a Councillor for South Perth and the Secretary of ALGWAWA. Veronica is quite an inspiring woman who is passionate about the City of Perth and believes she can make a difference in the community - and is willing to put in the hard yards to ensure that this happens!

ALGWAWA is an organisation that provides networking opportunities and support for women in local government. Through this organisation, members can enjoy free mentor services, networking opportunities and representation in dealing with issues or problems members may be facing in their branch.

The purpose of this meeting was to outline the prescribed changes in the constitution of the organisation, and to have members pass these changes through majority vote. I did not previously know that all incorporated organisations, no matter how small, are required to have their own constitution which outlines their methods of conduct and operation in business.

After the changes to the constitution were passed, Marion Fulker from the Committee for Perth gave a quick guest talk to give her oipinion about the changes facing Perth and the challenges facing women in industry and local government.

Some of Marion's very interesting key points (well the ones that I could understand) include:

- Perth is expected to grow in population from 1.7 million people to 3.5 million people by 2031. The City is apparently very unprepared for this change and unwilling to move forward in accommodating for this change;

- According to Marion, there is a very backward attitude in the community about allowing change to take place with a resounding 'NO' coming from most communities consulted about any changes;

- Local Government branches need to engage in dialogue with their communities about proposed changes, and educate them about why these changes are necessary for the advancement of Perth;

- Every representative from local government that attended the meeting agreed that it was very difficult to coordinate communications across state and local governments. This seemed to be a point of contention with every woman who attended, with a resounding agreement to amend this problem in due course.

On a lighter note, the catering was amazing! The catering company - By Word of Mouth really impressed me, creating mouth-watering bite-sized delicacies that I just could not get enough of.

Tomorrow is the strategic planning session for the City of South Perth - - I will update again after that!

Well, this is it. Year 2012 is knocking on my door and I am thrilled to welcome it in! It has been three years already since I started my ‘BA Mass Comm’ course at Charles Telfair Institute and I am finally stepping in this so heard about and expected PR393 internship-the final PR module ever!

Tonight is a pretty special night. Indeed, like every one of us, I just got my Curtin exam results. After 10minutes of total freak out (Oasis is such a user friendly system y’all), I finally got them. What a relief! I can finally look forward to my last semester and ultimately being a degree holder.

Enough of beating around the bush, I am here to talk about my internship at Sun Resorts. For those who never heard of Sun Resorts before, it is a major Mauritian hotel group that currently owns and manages four resorts in Mauritius and one in Maldives: Le Touessrok, Long Beach, Sugar Beach, La Pirogue and Kanuhura Maldives.

If I have to choose one word to sum up my first 8 days of internship I’d say hectic! In fact, since the first day, I was considered as a full time employee amongst the great team of 5 people working in the marketing/communication department of the company. As a matter of fact, no real time was allocated to sweet welcoming notes and spoon feeding of how my tasks have to be carried out during my full month of placement there. As such, this was great because I immediately got engulfed in the working routine!

During those first eight days, my tasks consisted of eclectic duties surrounding the communication of Sun Resorts with close cooperation with the marketing department.

I worked on follow ups on the itinerary of media visits, i.e. assuring that the programme scheduled by the Communication Manager is being respected during media visits where international journalists stay for some days at the Sun Resorts hotels and later on report about their experiences in their respective newspapers and magazines.

I also worked closely with the Sales and Marketing Manager on an advertising which will be published soon in the local press. I redrafted the text of the advert in a more “PR format” (inverted pyramid style) and gave some critical ideas about the photos being used as well.

At the end of last week I was asked to write a media release in both French and English about Le Touessrok Golf Course being voted ‘Best Golf Resort 2011’ by the German Diners Club Magazine. I had the opportunity to interview the Manager of Le Touessrok Golf Course, Russell Hannah, and gathered some quotes from him to add to the release.

Amongst other tasks, I was also made administrator of the Sun Resorts’ numerous Facebook pages and the different websites they have online. I am therefore constantly updating content, photos, videos, posting press kits so as to create traffic around Sun Resorts and keep the communication going strong.

For the time being, I am really looking forward to make the most of this internship, to gain knowledge from my thankfully very helpful supervisors and put into practice those PR skills I have been learning for nearly three years now. My next post will be about the most exciting part of my internship – The EVENT, which is coming up very soon!

Hello Interns
As the Khupe Group of Companies is home to three different companies, I had the privilege of working with the employees at Ihawu Holdings. i printed flyers and organised publications with the newspapers and community magazines.

One of the many aspects i enjoyed about this internship, or rather PR as a whole is the benefits you get from having contacts and maintaining loyalty with clients.
I received a complimentary room for 2 for 2 nights from a competitor hotel as well as a close partner in dealing with hospitality, Marang Hotel and Casino. It was a superb experience as I got to see how PR environment deals with fellow PR executives.It was a great experience and one which shows that it takes a win-win situation to have a good basis for good Public relations.

The radio stations also gave us a period of free air time, because they had made a mistake with the script an the initial agneda we had agreed on.
The internship at this time was beginning to get very interesting and interactive.

Assessment of my internship

The skills that I obtained in adhering to this internship can be concluded as dealing with clients or customer relations. I felt as though my articulate speech has improved and thus encouraging to an extent.
it was tough at times when it came to meeting client deadlines, but all in all it paid off in the end. there was a time when the radio needed the amended script of which i had to edit; a long hour but i eventually managed.

The managing director, Mrs Khupe had good feedback about the work i did and felt that i had done the best but could work on certain areas such as getting to work at a few minutes before 8 to ensure that i am on time for the 8am briefing. It was winter, i did have trouble waking up.

Other than that it was a good experiencing getting to know the radio, newspaper and inside of the hotel industry.

The most fun part of my internship was when I get to be on the planning team for the annual exhibition. University Putra Malaysia (UPM) showcased a total of 570 exhibits from the field of agriculture, food, forestry and environment, health, science, technology, engineering and social science at the Invention, Research and Innovation Exhibition (PRPI 2011), and this was held from 19th to 21st of July, 2011.

The exhibition feature the launching of a book entitled ‘Contemporary Environmental Quality Management in Malaysia and Selected Countries’, a product of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with United Malacca Berhad in relation to the management of palm oil farming involving a fund of RM2 million, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between UPM’s Institute of Advanced Technology and Malaysian Green Technology Corporation.

My task was being involved in developing a part of Exhibition program which was scheduling the campus tour. Where visitors, school students, members of the industry and media will be taken on a tram ride to UPM Equine Centre to experience firsthand handling of horses; to Putra Dairy Park to witness the hi-tech cow milking and to view UPM’s deer, cow and goat farming technologies; to Institute of Bioscience’s Conservatory Park to view the different types of herbs grown there;, the animal clinic where veterinarians will share a tip or two on animal care; and to the orchid farm. I was also among the tour guiders who took the respective attendees throughout the campus.

Finally my internship came to an end and with all the experience that i have gained during my time with the company i would say Public Relations is a very much interesting job. I so wish I could keep working but that's not the case...
Well, on my last days of the internship I still had my hands full because I enjoyed doing what I did and everyone was very nice and cooperating. So in the last week I helped out in writing an article and also gave out ideas which i had to research about to contribute to their newsletter.
Now i am very much interested in working in the PR field.

This is the part that I would say I found very busy and tiring but at the same time it was real fun and lots of experience. During preparations for the event i was involved in so many things such as having to call a long list of guests to confirm their attendance for the event and then i had to make even more calls to hotels for their accommodation. Sometimes i had to go out and ask for quotations for food, decorations, entertainment and inside the office i helped in issuing memos and helped in drafting speeches for press conferences and also organizing them.

One major job functions of my internship involved research. My very first task at UPM was to research on speaking opportunities for up coming conferences. Basically it involved conducting basic searches using medium such as Google and Yahoo. Beyond simply researching and coming up with results I feel that being involved in various activities and team meetings to discuss my finding was a great way for me to practice my interpersonal and communication skills.

I was tasked to work on the design of product website which was Lushious to change it to a new look. The team decided to give a more appealing look to it.

The ultimate goal was to make the product website informative and interactive to the users.

I was updating product information whereby I was getting information from Sale department and Sourcing department.

I was also a photographer I was taking photographs of products like Lushious and Paiola. The task was a bit challenging because I did not have any photography background.

Most of this tasked were performed in a group form and that is when I used my experience from school group assignments. Team work was never a problem from because almost all our Public Relations assignments are done in groups.

hello,
just poped in to tell you that i had a much needed experience during our AIDS workshop this past week and i gaind the needed experience to help me in this field of PR. the workshop lasted for 5 days as a whole and i can say my work there was much different from a normal day at the office.

My job was to mainly assist all the participants with any help they needed regarding the workshop. i was put in place to make sure that our clients where happy, and this just goes to show that here in ABU it is very important to meet and satisfy our clients and build a strong relationship with them. i had the time of my life interacting with top dogs of the media world, and this has made me even more anxious to go out there and put what i have learned in Uni into practice.

So today I will be ending my internship on the whole it has been an experience.A number of challenges of course but nothing is easy in this world.We are all here to learn and trust me I learnt alot.

The department I worked for brought a cake which we cut in the office,which was kind of a surprise did not expect it.....they have all been helpful so many bittersweet memories.I will miss them.The skills I have learnt here will help me in the public relations field. as much as i was getting more comfortable and confident at the office, i got more than i bargained for in the weeks ahead. we were planning a fundraising dinner for the orphans again but this time around it was not that simple. i had to be the one to make calls and send some invites, and even find the most suitable venue for the event.

i found myself waking up earlier than usual, and knocking off late. the task was even hard as the dates clashed with other important events and the few hotels i found were fully booked but through hard work and determination, i managed to work through it all and at the end of the day i was able to find the venue, and most of the invites decided to come for the event.

By the way, this earned me the name BABY BOSS at work since i had to push everyone to make sure all went well!! hahaha

hello again!!!

My second big task was assisting in planning the Creativity In Motion fashion show which is a bi-annual event organized by students from the Limkokwing International Lifestyle Design Academy that I also took part in. It was the first event I ever planned and during the planning I got to be assigned a lot of tasks to do which involved sending invites to the media through e-mails,faxes and calls. I had to call the media everyday before the fashion show to make a follow up of who will and will not be able to attend the event and as tiring as it sounds it was a great experience!!

There is a lot of multi-tasking in Public Relations and this broadened my knowledge of what really pr is about. With what i have learned from my internship i see myself even more interested in pursuing the public relations field in the future.

Hi everyone!!
My name is Michelle, currently undertaking a degree in Mass communication,majoring in journalism and doing Public Relations as my minor.
Public Relations has a lot more to it than I thought and my first day as an intern in Limkokwing University was buzzing with activity and I learned a lot.

I was assigned to attend an event which was held on campus and after interview different participants than compile a report on the event.This was pretty much a big challenge for especially on the first day.As I was taught in my previous Public Relations classes I learned there are different approaches to interview and to being interviewed.So putting this into practice as my first assigned task was quite an experience.

I am to update you more about major tasks i have undertaken.

hectic week

my second week at work was both tiring and interesting. my team mates and i had the opportunity to be a part of an event plan for the SOS fAMILY FUN DAY, an event aimed at raising funds for the underprivileged children who have no homes and most of them are AIDS orphans.

we firstly had to visit the children's home and my task here was to organise transport to and from the children's home. i had to make a few calls to the well known transport agencies since our organisation only had a small car that could not accomodate all the workers.

after a few calls and a few rejects, i managed to get help from Seabelos Bus services who offered us a mini bus. the finance department took it from there and guess what, everything went according to plan.

there is this new series called "FREE AGENTS" . it started airing last month and it has like 7 episodes now... i should say its my one of my best series at the moment because its so hilarious and its about a PR which is good for me because i get to relax and learn something or two at the same time.

In the series this PR firm with about 5 Practitioners who are the main characters in the series will go out of their way to use crazy ideas to solve a crisis or problem for their clients and in the end, the clients are happy and content.

As long as the Client is satisfied and happy then you know as a Pr you have succeeded because one of the main objective of a Pr is to make the Client happy at all times.

when ever am watching this series i laugh to tears and at the same time i get to learn how to think out of the box for ideas on how to solve a crisis when one rather than using the ordinary ideas in books and those taught in class...

I encourage you all to watch this series...its the best!!!....

my first week at work

its amazing how things turned out at work. thanks to having worked under my so supportive boss, Mr. Marumo. on my first week i had the opportunity to do the administration part of updating the library, requesting for the latest advertising rates from local newspapers, file labeling and general filling to help update the records of the company.

since i am advance, i managed to do some website updates on the events that Three Daughters Consultancy was planning to host

To be honest it was not as easy as i thought it would be, but because of the support i got from my co-workers and boss, i managed to work it over

I had the opportunity to undergo an internship with the THREE DAUGHTERS CONSULTANCY COMPANY, one of the few Public Relations consultancy company in Botswana. My eight weeks internship placement proved to be the best experience, as I happened to be part of a dynamic, hardworking and most of all most helpful and cooperative staff of three sisters consultancy company.

This was more of an eye opener for a learner like me since I learnt a lot concerning public and media relations and how they operate. It was during my training as an intern that I became exposed to media strategic planning and media advertising and this gave me the experience to sharpen my writing skills and the logistics of event management.

busy weekend

Hey everyone,

This is the first time ever in my life I found myself busy note: "on a weekend". The workshop had me up every morning at 6 and I got home every night at around 8 to 9pm.

I’m not complaining tho, because the experience was all worth it and I learnt a lot from the talk itself and the different experts that were there. I was responsible for helping register the participants from the 14 different countries every morning when they came in and directed them to their designated areas. this gave me a chance to work hand in hand with the companies clients which is what PR is all about, having a good relationship with your clients. it was very challenging to begin with as I was dealing with producers from top TV stations in their countries, but warmed up to it all and got compliments for my punctuality, assistance and participation.

The little that happened this weekend has been an eye opener and I hope to learn more in this profession which will help strengthen my skills and make me marketable. The workshop ends on Wednesday and will update you about the whole experience then.

For the last time...

Hello fellow PR Students for the last time,

In my last post I shared a problem I was having at work regarding an issue with a colleague. Just thought I would do a quick update. I've decided to not let it bother me and not let it affect my internship, including my contribution or view of the organisation. I understand that she believed I had somehow undermined her, even though I did no such thing. This then caused her to think I had some ulterior motive, which then led to her not trusting me. And by her approaching me the way she did, made me not trust her and question whether I will get credit for the work I am doing. I still stand by the fact I do not think she dealt with the situation in the correct manner but have decided to put it behind me and move forward.

I have learnt so much from my time at Zaccaria Group. I learnt it is important to look at the bigger picture and not let other people affect your work. I went into this student placement thinking that I wanted to get into event management, but I have now decided I would prefer to utilise more of my PR skills and work in a job that requires more than just event management.

Although my 20 days are up, I am still staying on with Zaccaria Group, I feel my work there is not done and am excited for the future. Thanks, and goodluck to everyone!

workshop for TV content producers

Hi guyz,

Today was particularly very interesting for me as my boss got me involved with a major workshop we have coming up this weekend for TV content producers. I was responsible for the media calling, and it was challenging to begin with but after a few call I had already got it and confident thanks to the skills I learnt rom school of professionalism and conduct when dealing with the media.

I called different media houses who said they would be coming to remind them for our HIV and AIDS workshop we will be having for the TV content producers this weekend.

My other task was to call up the Hotel (Grand Subang Dorsset) and check which of our affiliates had already arrived and checked in. this was a little exhausting as I was talking so much and repeating the same things over and over again as I made the different calls, but all in all I got the job done.

I also helped my boss with making slide presentations that she will be using tomorrow and collected all last minute materials that are going to be used.

All in all, I enjoyed the whole process and felt very obliged to be given such an opportunity to improve my communication skills. Im pretty sure this is going to come handy at some point in my career as I venture into the PR industry.

It's only the beginning

Hey everyone!

Now this (I hope) is my last post as an undergraduate student.

Semester is done, report is done... and I know everyone's done a fantastic job.

One of the most exciting module, if not THE MOST EXCITING module came to an end, and most of us are already relishing the prospect of working as a real PR professional.

This last semester, these 20± days of internship have enabled us to put everything we've learned during the past three years into practice, and is just one little sample of what we have to do further down the PR road.

I must say that my PR internship is not really over, as am still pretty much active at Imagine Communication. Am involved in a number of campaign with the organisation.

How is it going on with you lot? Still keeping in touch with your internship place? Please do... making contacts is good... but keeping them is what really matters! So keep in touch.

With everyone already 'experienced' to some extent at least, I wish you all the very best in life!

now that we have reached the end of our internhsip. i am sad that i have to leave Amnesty international. but i am quite excited with my report and the activities and task that i was assigned.

first of all there were some task that i could never believe were related to public relations even though we use it on an everyday basis such as email and phone calls. But public relations is also about how well we can communicate to promote the image of our organisation and creating awareness.

reaching the end of my internship, i was assigned the most exciting task ever. it was to coordinate the welcome booklet that Amnesty was looking forward to launh for their new members and donors. this task has allowed me to get in touch with different people to get some arcticles regarding the campaigns that Amnesty intrenational did. it also encouraged me to research about Amnesty international, regarding it vision, mission and core values.

Hi again everyone,

I was working through the report and found myself reflecting on my time at CBH Group. It made me realise that my studies come to an end this semester and that I should really be looking for a job at this point and time. But I find myself quite lost most of the time as to what area I think would be the best for me, which would make me happy and keep me satisfied.

I was speaking to one of the contract workers at CBH and he said something really interesting that made me even more confused and anxious about finishing. He said that you shouldn’t just try to get into any job for the sake of having a job, but rather think about how you would feel about going to the job on Monday morning. He said that if you’re not happy about going to work on a Monday morning then it means you don’t love what you are doing. This was an eye opener for me as I’m already really unsure about what I want to do when I finish in November. Very confused!

Anyway finishing my last day at the internship made me feel pretty sad, because I was getting use to going to catching the bus and train into the city every Tuesday and Wednesday. I feel that I have become familiar with CBH’s values and have grown accustomed to the processes and procedures. CBH truly value their employees and have adopted the ethic that if the employees are satisfied then they will be more productive and happy to do their jobs.

My Experience at CBH:

At first I only had a vague idea about the corporate environment and was not sure what to expect from an office job. However, working at CBH gave me confidence in my skills and my abilities to undertake unfamiliar tasks. It has given me an understanding of what is required of a professional working in the corporate world.

Never Ending

Hey Bloggers,

I hope everyone is celebrating at the prospect of handing in this insane report!

It has been two weeks since I have completed my internship at Rossmoyne Senior High School, and for some unknown reason I am still working for them.
In this time, I have sent out two press releases to the Canning Times on a couple of stories that I worked on during my actual internship, continued organising the and liaising with the volunteers I acquired after my little presentation at the Curtin Event Management 304 class a few weeks back, and updating the school’s alumni database on its new members. I guess work is never ending in the public relations sector, but to that end I have enjoyed myself these past two months.

On the final day of my internship, I received not only a token of appreciation but a severely long, but amazing speech from the school principal thanking me on all my contributions. This was definitely a highlight as I have never once received any form of recognition throughout my high school years. I guess, in hindsight everyone is able to redeem themselves if you put in the effort to.

I do believe my greatest achievement was the launch of the Alumni program which has the potential ability to attract all of Rossmoyne’s past graduates back to 1968. Granted it has not taken off to a speeding manner I would have hoped for, however I still believe it does has the ability to be something great should the school invest more time, and finances into promoting it.
Although the internship has ended, my relationship with my high school hasn’t. I was offered to help organise and run the Alumni launch event, which will be held early on next year; considering it is my baby, I do believe I could spend a few extra days in addition to this internship to help the school that provided many highs and lows for over 5 years.

The Final Frontier

Yesterday was my final day at the EMRC.

The time I spent there was amazing and the things that I learnt were invaluable. The people there, amazing.

Knowing it was my last day actually made me feel sad. I was welcomed with open arms into the organisation. I was a part of their team, not just a student that was interning for a semester. I made many friends, including another Curtin University PR student, who is planning on doing her internship next semester.

I'm glad that I chose to do my placement at the EMRC, it was a great learning experience and also gave me a great indication of what the "real world" is about, and how it operates. Being a part of the organisation not only taught me about PR, but taught me things about myself. Working gave me a big boost in confidence and the ability of speaking up, even if i'm a bit nervous about doing so.

During the semester, I was also offered a position in a PR and Media Consultancy in Leederville called Mills Wilson. I was emailed my job offer on a day that I was actually working at the EMRC! At the very least, my team was probably more excited than I was (which would have been hard to top!)! It was amazing to see such a supportive group of people! Staff from the rest of the organisation learnt of my new employment and all came to congratulate me and offer their support. I start my new position (full time, around university work) the week after my exams finish. I can't wait to start, and still can't believe i've secured myself a job for when I graduate. I'm ecstatic!

Back to the EMRC, my final few days were quite sad, and I had not only developed a bond with my team, but the staff around me. On my final day, we had an afternoon tea - for an employee from the I.T department. I did feel bad (but it was quite funny) as most of our staff learnt that yesterday was my last day at the morning tea. They decided that rather than it being David's birthday morning tea, it was my goodbye morning tea - so I did steal his thunder - by mistake!! I also received these beautiful flowers from my team, which was a really nice thing to do - I was really not expecting them!

I could not have thanked them enough, and I would like to thank them again. I could not have survived a day without Teresa or Teale, I owe them so much. They were great mentors, guides and friends during my time at the EMRC. I could not have asked for anyone better to work with or a better place to work in. If I could do it all over again, I would!!

But I do have my new job awaiting.....

My report has been completed, and i'm neither sure how many hours of sleep i've lost or how many bunches of hair i've pulled from my head! But I must say, it was really enjoyable writing the report. It was a great reflection of the past semester. When I look over the report that is ready for submission, I can't believe how much work I have done in my placement and how quickly the time went by!

And so, I've completed the final frontier....

For the rest of you out there, I hope you're not going to lose too much sleep tonight on your last minute touches!

Coming to an end...

After a hectic first day at the show I felt more confident about organising and managing the rest of the week. I had lots of help running the stall from the range of volunteers I had recruited for the week with some volunteers being younger and providing a fun and energetic vibe to the more experienced volunteers and therapy focus staff who were excellent at working with the children and providing information about therapy services available to children.

The most popular activity for the duration of the show was the sunflower planting activity which was the activity provided for visitors following the IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road, where children got a small pot (or cup) where they filled it up with soil and sunflower seeds, watered their seeds and decorated to take home and plant in their gardens and watch it grow. The other most popular activity was the face painting which proved to be a bit of a challenge as not all volunteers, including myself, had the artistic ability or were game enough to attempt to paint the children’s faces. Although we were lucky to get lots of talented face painters on most days!

The other activities that were provided included the arts and crafts table, where kids could choose out of 3 pictures they wanted to paint to stick up on the art wall named “my special ability” that would demonstrate the various abilities of the children participating. There was also a wheelchair race/obstacle course where people could come and have a go on a wheelchair and see what it’s like for people living with a disability that constrains their mobility. Another disability awareness activity where children’s eyesight was impaired was also planned but we had our hands full with the other various activities and decided this activity was not needed.

The last attraction provided was enthusiastic volunteers got to dress as the Therapy Focus mascot ‘Sunny the Sunflower’ and roam the showgrounds to raise awareness of the organisation and encourage people to visit our stall. Sunny was very popular with the children, although it was not always the most pleasant experience for the volunteers in the hot weather!

For the duration of the show I only encountered a couple of minor issues, the main one being volunteers cancelling or changing their shifts at the last minute. Luckily I had organised enough volunteers that we were able to manage when replacements couldn’t be found. I also found a couple of time I was running out of materials, which was solved simply by obtaining cash to buy more. The only other issue I encountered was dealing with a lost child at our stall which was dealt with through the help of event staff.

Overall the show was very successful with over 8,000 people visiting the stall to plant sunflower seeds and take part in other activities. I have just had my last official day at my internship, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Therapy Focus. I am very thankful for being given the opportunity to work in an organisation such as this and work on rewarding events like the Royal Show where I was able to meet and interact with the people that benefit from their services. I am grateful for all the help I was given while I was interning and will miss working at Therapy Focus!!

The beginning of the 2011 Perth Royal Show

After all the planning and preparation that had gone into the show it was finally only a few days away. In the last few days leading up to the show my main focus was finalising all my volunteers and ensuring I had filled enough positions and the volunteers had all the information they needed before starting at the show, as well as packing and getting everything ready to take to the show.

After having a site viewing of where our stall would be at the show we decided we needed to order some astro turf to cover the concrete and a shade tent so that the kids wouldn’t be out in the sun while doing their activities. Luckily we were able to organise this last minute and I went to the showgrounds to meet the contractors. The day before the start of the show we began setting up everything we could at the showgrounds to make it easier to set up on the first day.

On Saturday morning the first day of the show, we arrived bright and early to see huge lines of people already waiting to get into the show. We began setting up all the various activities including the sunflower planting which would be the main attraction, the arts and crafts, face painting and wheelchair racing which helps educate children in a fun way what it would be like to have a disability that restrains your movement and mobility. Just before 9 I went and met our first group of volunteers and briefed them on what they would be doing for the duration of their shift.

At 9am when the show officially opened we began getting our first visitors who were part of the IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road. The first day was a busy and hectic day and I quickly learnt that events were often stressful and tiring. Saying this, I feel I learnt a lot from the first day and realised how to become better at managing my volunteers and understanding where most attention was needed, how to organised everything so it worked most effectively, and what activities were successful and which weren’t so popular. Overall it was successful first day, and I knew I had a busy week ahead!

Time flies. In a couple of days, it will be the official ending of my Internship with such a wonderful organisation. My time at United Way has been the most fulfilling and rewarding time. Through this internship, I managed to identify what I want to move towards in terms of PR. I saw the importance of Internal Communications within the organisation. It is very crucial that an organisation are able to communciate effectively internally before reaching out to the external audience.

Furthermore to my internship days, I have co-founded a student body of United Way. It can be said as my greatest achievement at United Way. Although our internship has end, however, our relationship continues. I will still be in-charge to oversee the Student United Way project until we have found somebody who are capable of continuing it.

Student United Way is a student led base club. We build long-lasting relationships and Give, Advocate and Volunteer in the areas of Education, Income and Health. Hello one last time bloggers,

I hope that you are all doing great! This is it….. We have made it, by facing the ups and downs of the PR reality and actually I am quite relieved that the semester is ending. This was surely the heftiest semester that I have had but as a whole I enjoyed it because my internship has really brought me to an upper level where I gained in confidence and experience.

One of the most interesting PR activities in which I was constantly involved was the preparation and coordination of CUT’s second harm reduction conference in September 2011. The conference saw the participation of various stakeholders from the local, regional and international level who would discuss on harm reduction issues through different plenary sessions.

Prior to the conference, I joined the communication team that was set up to act as the conference reporters for the plenary sessions. Training sessions were given to help us to better understand harm reduction and related issues. In the role of conference reporter, it was important for me to understand clearly harm reduction concepts so that I would be able to report effectively. This interesting and unique experience taught me the importance of taking notes rapidly in a systematic way that would facilitate the writing of press releases.

HWE Mining - A Different Side

Working within the Communications Department for HWE Mining as been very exciting, I have a whole new out look on the aspects of Internal Communications in a Public Relations sense.

My jobs so far have been data work, newsletter writing, service awarde preparation, and assisting the communications team with any help they needed. My recent job, saw me help out at HWE Mining Family Fun Day. This year the Family Fun Day was at Perths Zoo and saw over 900 employees attend with their families. This was my first large scale event, and I got to see how this ran.

Luckily enough for Sara and the Comms team, Perth Zoo took care of all the organisation of events, and catering so there wasn't much to organise however, from an internal viewpoint we had to communicate this message to the all employees of HWE Mining in Western Australia.

This involved:

Information in the monthly newsletters and

Personalised invitations to all employees who work for the company, sent out to them and there partners.

Although they only used these two measures, they were effective as 900 employees turned up in which 1000 RSVP to the event. On Sunday morning I arrived early to the Zoo in which i helped put poster signs up guiding employees to our designated area, I also greeted families as they walked in and handed out merchandise to them and their families. I also assisted in checking of names. My purpose of being there was to ensure that everything was running in order and on time.

This was a great opportunity for myself to experience a large scale event and I will definitely be adding this to my resume and into my final report...

Hello again,

Well I have completed by internship at Amnesty today. Firstof all it has been very difficult for me to deal with my courses and work atthe same time. All my friends at CTI are aware that we had Business capstone.Some of my tasks that I was assigned during my work are:

o Calling CSR companies to complete data

o Reviewing brochures for hotels and companiesregarding training

o Calling companies

o Drafting emails and reviewing emails

o Participated in fund raising activities

o Coordinating the welcome back releasing inNovember for Donors and members

o Reviewing the Australian welcome back andwriting it in the Mauritian context

o Meeting the person responsible for campaign andgetting ideas about what to write.

I have completed my internship at Amnesty but I am stillhelping them out in the completion of the welcome pack.

Fundraising activity

Hi friends,

I just wanted to share somethingthat happened to me during my internship. Once we had to participate in afundraising activity. We were all given 2 lots of lotteries to sell on thestreets and shops. Fortunately I had one more friend who was also doing herinternship at Amnesty. It was something new to us as we had never done such anactivity before. We were feeling odd about talking to people and persuadingthem to buy the tickets in order to help the poor. But we took some courage andtried doing it. Little by little it started coming automatically and we wereable to sell a lot of lotteries.

But it was a very nice experienceas we had to make use of our PR knowledge and abilities in persuading thepublic. I also believe that she will also agree with me.

Hello Bloggers,

This is my second last blog I will miss reading other people's blogs because they have been interesting and there is alot to learn. One of the policies at the company I work for is Happy Friday.

Here employees dress down and work begins at 8am to 12pm. We are then taken to a restaurant or the beach to unwind.But it is not all unwinding we are team building. This helps to find a way where we can improve each other in terms of work. This was a nice experience as I got to see a lighter side of the employees.

The first one I attended was quite intense because I was put on the hot seat.....I was asked different questions so that employees from other departments could get to know me. The other Fridays were quite interesting especially the last one.The company had a send off cake for me.

I will really miss them especially the New Age Media department.
